Balance, strength training reduces elderly falls

Falling in the elderly is one of the main reasons for accidents and injuries in people age 65 and older, but now a new study finds older people who engage in balance and strength training can significantly reduce their risk of falling by nearly one third.

Australian researchers discovered incorporating these exercises into routine activities mattered

However, less than 10 percent of older people regularly participated in strength training and even fewer exercised to improve their balance.

They say their study in BMJ Online also showed participants had enhanced function and participation in daily activities.
