St. Jude Police Memorial March draws thousands honoring fallen officers

May 5, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Thousands of police officers and their families participated in the emotional event near Chicago's Museum Campus.

The march pays tribute to police officers killed in the line of duty. Each unit of the police department passes the police memorial and then salutes the Gold Star families, relatives who have lost officers.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy was among those marching with the Gold Star families.

"I go by and I look at the familiar faces that I have seen as a young officer on the job who have lost their lives and how they have affected my life and my career," said Fabian Sanchez of the Chicago Police Department.

Organizers and participants say they take the St. Jude Police Memorial very seriously and that families look forward to it year after year.

They could not have asked for a more beautiful day, as weather conditions Sunday morning were sunny and mild.
