CHICAGO (WLS) -- For those who are not ready to venture too far despite restrictions being lifted, there are virtual suggestions and outdoor ideas for others this weekend.

Dr. Eagle Watching - Starved Rock State Park



This is usually the time the Illinois Audubon Society would hold its Eagle Watching event at Starved Rock State Park - but not this year, due to COVID - but, you can certainly head to Starved Rock on your own and try and spot these majestic birds!

Eagles Watching - Rock Run Rookery, Joliet


There are lots of other places to spot our National Bird - in Will County the Rock Run Rookery Preserve in Joliet HS been a Bald Eagle bonanza for the past few weeks! Along with your binoculars, bring your mask because it is required outdoors when you can't socially distance.

Ice Castles - Lake Geneva, Wis.


The populace Ice Castles in Lake Geneva opens at 6:00 pm tonight! This interactive experience features ice-carved tunnels, frozen thrones and towers of ice embedded with color-changing lights. Covid safety precautions this year include mandatory masks, limited capacity and one-way markings on tunnels and crawl spaces. Ice Castles runs through February 15th.

Ever wonder how the animals in our forests survive during winter? The Cook County Forest Preserve can answer that, on Saturday at 1 pm with their virtual presentation Winter Survival: Mammal Edition! The event is free, but you have to register by calling the Crabtree Nature Center in Barrington Hills at 847-381-6592.

HotHouse Meets Havana - HotHouse website


On the virtual music beat, Jazz Plaza: HotHouse Meets Havana is now streaming for free on the HotHouseGlobal platform! Now through Sunday this exciting mix of Chicago and Cuban based artists will perform at 7 pm, preceded by a dance party at 6:30!

A Night of Broadway and Opera - McAninch Arts Center online


And beginning Saturday, the McAninch Arts Center's New Philharmonic opens 2021 virtually, with A Night of Broadway and Opera. The concert was recorded last October and features works from musicals, like The Phantom of the Opera, and operas, including Carmen. The performance will be available on demand through February 28th.

And just in time for indoor restaurant dining returning to Will County, there's a new restaurant and craft brewery that just opened in Lockport! The Lock & Mule offers an eclectic chef-inspired menu based around open-flame cooking on its large wood fired grill. The interior design was inspired by the local history of Lockport!
