City council approves law protecting bicyclists

The Chicago City Council approved a new ordinance Wednesday that fines drivers who are reckless when sharing the road with bike riders.Drivers who turn in front of someone on a bicycle will be fined.

There are also penalties for passing within less than three feet of space between a car and a bike and for opening a vehicle door into the path of a cyclist.

Violators could be fined between $150 and $500.
