Concerns over energy-safe light bulbs

Britain's Health Protection Agency is warning about ultraviolet light that can be emitted from energy safe light bulbs.

The HPA is cautioning homeowners against being closer than a foot to some of these compact fluorescent bulbs for long periods of time. The agency says there is no evidence the bulbs cause cancer, but an expert with the group says the UV rays can cause reddening of the skin.

Consumers are being advised to look for CFL lights where the coils are covered like a traditional bulb.

No one manufacturer has been singled out by the research, which is due to be published in an academic journal.
