Strength training may not only keep aging adults physically fit, it could help minds stay sharp. Researchers found an improvement in higher order thinking skills among elderly men and women who did strength and balance training.

Past studies have shown a link between brain function and balance problems.

The program detailed in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society combined walking twice a week with exercises for the knees, hips and ankles. Patients not only showed improvement in cognitive skills, they also decreased their risk of falling.
