New Chicago police officers on streets

Police superintendent Jody Weis and Mayor Richard Daley congratulated the new graduates Thursday morning.

The mayor blasted gang violence and told the new officers they won't be able to fight it on their own.

"We have to get more people involved in this, we have to tell the community it's up to you to stop the shooting…to tell us where the guns are because eventually it's going to affect their own child," said Mayor Daley.

Thursday's ceremony included a moment of silence for officers Nathaniel Taylor and Joseph Airhart who recently died after they were shot in the line of duty.
