Plan to close school draws ire

March 5, 2009 (CHICAGO) School employees, parents and others who support the Montefiore Special Elementary School spoke at a news conference Thursday. They are urging Chicago Public Schools to reverse the decision.

"These teachers, they educate, they nurture, they love. They put forth the effort to help a child understand. Yes, you may be going through something emotionally, but guess what, it's not the end of the world," said Blanche Ivey, parent.

"We should not permit the Chicago board of education to close down this school at all," said Ald. Bob Fioretti, 2nd Ward.

Last year, CPS decided against similar cuts after public pressure.

In a statement, the CP says its office of specialized services is conducting a review of Montefiore's appeal before issuing a final recommendation.
