A new study shows eliminating just a small amount of sodium could have a profound effect on heart disease. Researchers from the University of California at San Francisco say cutting just 1 gram of salt from the American diet could save 200,000 lives over the next decade.

According to the report, Americans now consume an average of 9 to 12 grams of sodium per day, with the saltiest hits coming from fast food and pre-packaged meals.

Experts are recommending shoppers check labels and buy low-sodium whenever possible.
