School district approves layoffs

Hundreds of teachers and staff will be losing their jobs under a cost cutting plan approved by a suburban school district on Monday night.The school board in Elgin, District U46, is looking to save $17 million in next year's budget.

The board heard from concerned parents on Monday night.

The plan calls for a total of 348 full time positions to be eliminated.

Most of the layoffs impact administrators and administrative support personnel, including secretaries. But some special education staff, librarians and nurses are also being cut.
