Police search for station clerk's killers

June 17, 2009 (GARY, Ind.) Gurjeet Singh, 26, was killed Sunday evening.

The deadly shooting was caught on tape. Police released the surveillance video on Wednesday.

Police released the tape because up until now they have only received a couple of calls from witnesses.

Gurjeet Singh was originally from India but moved to the United States from Canada about a year ago.

Police released a photo of Singh at the gas station where he was killed Sunday evening. In the photo, the 26-year-old is standing next to the station's video surveillance equipment. The police are counting on that equipment to help find four men they say are responsible for the murder.

"I'm hoping that neighbors, relatives call, church members. If you know these people, recognize these people, call in, give us their names, addresses," said Gary Det. James Bond.

In the surveillance video, you can see four men enter the Gary mini mart and gas station. They first case the place. Then a man in a red shirt kicks open the door that takes him behind the counter where Singh was working. What you don't see is where Singh was shot in the neck.

Randy Singh is Gurjeet's uncle and the owner of the gas station. They lived together and were very close.

"Everybody liked him. He's a very good guy. Never no problems with nobody," said Randy Singh.

Singh says last Sunday was the first time his gas station had been robbed. On Wednesday, community activists passed out flyers hoping to get help, something they say they didn't get the night of the murder. People are seen leaving the station the night of the robbery and murder but none of them called police.

"Any time you see a crime and don't report it, that's bad enough, but when you see a violent act to this magnitude and don't call attention to it, that says something about your soul as a person," said Det. Bond.

Police are now hoping some of those customers will call police with information.

All four suspects are seen fleeing in an old burgundy Toyota with no hubcaps.

Anyone with any information or identification of the suspects in that surveillance video is asked to call the Gary Police Department.
