Elderly man killed in Evanston house fire

December 22, 2009 (CHICAGO) Neighbors saw smoke pouring out of the one-story ranch home and called for help. When firefighters arrived, they saw flames coming from the home.

"Firefighters began to extinguish the fire. During the primary search, they located approximately an 80-year-old male covered by about 4 feet of debris in the front of the house," said Chief Alan Berkowsky, Evanston Fire Department

The name of the victim-- who apparently lived alone -- has not yet been disclosed.

Evanston fire investigators and police, and the state fire marshal's office, are trying to determine what caused the blaze.
