Police opened fire on a man on the city's South Side late Thursday night in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Dozens of officers rushed to the area around 45th Street and Michigan Avenue following the shooting.

Investigators say officers were doing drug surveillance when they saw someone hand the suspect drugs and a gun.

When they approached his car, police say the man pointed a gun at officers, which prompted them to open fire.

The suspect was hospitalized under police guard. No officers were hurt in the shooting.

There was no word on the man's condition Friday evening. Police say no one else was hurt.
