'Get Fit' program to fight obesity in minority groups

April 6, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Elected officials and health organizations have joined forces to create "Get Fit Chicago." It's being called the largest campaign of its kind in Illinois to help educate and combat the rising epidemic of diabetes and family obesity.

The program will promote exercise and healthy eating at Chicago Public Schools throughout the Chicago Park District and at YMCAs.

Get Fit Chicago will also have stands at festivals throughout the city.

"We'll give them information at the events. We'll give them resources where they can go in their communities to see if they get screened for diabetes, see where they can take cooking classes in their community to learn how to feed their children better and to get healthier," said Michelle Lanter Smith, Get Fit Chicago.

Organizers say the Get Fit program will go national in 2011.
