The fire chief of northwest suburban Park Ridge has resigned his job while facing a claim of sexual harassment.

Craig Gjelsten allegedly demanded that a female employee of the fire department remove her clothing during a locked door encounter in the chief's office. The female employee refused and later filed a harassment complaint.

The chief resigned last Friday before the suburb began proceedings to fire him. He had been with the Park Ridge Fire Department for 19 years, the last year-and-a-half as chief.
