A 36-year-old assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center has been charged after police say they found explosives in his apartment.Investigators say they found 12 sticks of homemade explosives in Marcello DelCarlo's apartment in the 1600-block of West Ogden Sunday.

DelCarlo is listed as an assistant professor in the biochemistry department at Rush. Police say he admitted to making the explosives to use them on the Fourth of July. Authorities say they initially came to the apartment on a domestic disturbance call and that DelCarlo also faces a domestic battery charge.

DelCarlo is due in bond court Monday.
