Police say Ricardo Bustos was drunk when he drove into a highway construction worker last Friday on Interstate 94. Roger Sadler died on Sunday from injuries he suffered in the crash.
On Tuesday, a judge denied Bustos' request to be released from jail to take college final exams.
Some of the charges against Bustos were changed to higher-level felonies with longer prison penalties because of Sadler's death.
