Ill. House nixes school vouchers

A plan that would have allowed children in poorly performing public schools to transfer to private and parochial schools has been defeated in Springfield. The state House voted down the measure 48-66.

The school voucher plan would have given more than $3,700 to students who wanted out of Chicago's worst-performing and most overcrowded schools.

Opponents say the money should be used to fix the failing schools.
