New laws help Ill. service members

May 29, 2010 (CHICAGO) The governor signed the laws during a ceremony at Soldier Field.

The first will allow service members who are facing foreclosure to apply for a 90-day stay. It will apply to those men and women who are on active duty, and they must apply in writing.

The new law takes effect January 1.

"I think we have to make a special effort to help our service members who, in some cases, have a military pay far below what they're making in civilian life. So, we have to help them have a little more time to catch up on their mortgage," Quinn said.

The second law expands the number of men and women eligible to receive payment under the War on Terrorism Compensation Act.
