The accident happened in a wooded area near Valparaiso, just south of U.S. Highway 6.
The Porter County Sheriff's Office says the CSX freight train was carrying non-toxic cargo, but a hazardous materials team was sent as a precaution. The few homes nearby were not evacuated.
No injuries were reported in the accident.
