The American Society of Clinical Oncology is issuing new guidelines for the use of hormone-based breast cancer drugs.

They are called amromatase inhibitors, and the groups say most breast cancer patients past menopause should consider taking one of these drugs as some point.

The recommendation is to either start the medication right after surgery or after two to three years of the drug tamoxifen.

Aromatase inhibitors include the brand names Arimidex, Aromasin or Femara.

Patients should first consult their doctors before making any treatment changes.
