Construction is set to begin in early September on a high-speed rail route connecting Chicago to St. Louis.

The $98 million project is paid for with stimulus funds. It is expected to create 900 jobs.

Crews will first work on a 90-mile segment from just north of Alton to south of Springfield.

Rail improvements will allow passenger trains to run between Chicago and St. Louis at speeds of up to 110 mph.

Work on the first segment is expected to be completed by early as December.
