The chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court is stepping down for health reasons. Chief Justice Thomas Fitzgerald, 69, was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He will step down next month.

Fitzgerald was first elected to the state's high court in 2000 and presided over former governor Rod Blagojevich's impeachment trial. An appeals court judge will serve the remainder of his term.
