The Illinois Environmental Protection agency spent almost $1 million to remove more than 56,000 tires and 10,000 tons of debris, including liquid waste, from an illegal Markham dump.

A tire fire alerted officials to the 12-acre plot near 150th and Dixie Highway in April. While the surface clean-up is complete, it's not known if the U.S. EPA will require the excavation of soil that may have been contaminated with hazardous waste.
