In an attempt to cut costs, the University of Illinois may close the Institute of Aviation at the Champaign-Urbana campus.

The aviation program has been there for 54 years.

There are currently 107 students working toward aviation degrees, plus 48 students in a professional pilots program.

In a letter to the student body and staff, the university's interim chancellor said that closing the program could save up to $750,000 a year.
