Red yeast rice supplements sold as a natural alternative o cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may not be delivering what consumers expect.

A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine finds the supplements vary widely in how much active ingredient they contain.

Researchers also reported that eight of 12 products tested are contaminated with a toxic substance that can grow on rice.

The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate these supplements.

Researchers say Americans who think they are getting a reliable and safe alternative should take a closer look. They're also urging regulators to consider stricter limits on the products.
