E. coli could have long-term heart effects

A new study finds people who develop gastroenteritis from e. coli-contaminated drinking water are at an increased risk for high blood pressure, kidney problems, and heart disease later in life.

Scientists reporting in the online edition of BMJ say the findings underline the need for following up individual cases of food or water poisoning by e. coli.

Some of these patients experienced these effects up to eight years later.
