A Chicago teacher who thought he was attending a morning assembly was surprised to learn he was the guest of honor.

Dexter Chaney teaches third grade at Ryerson Elementary. He gets to school early so students can stop by and talk.

Chaney's passion for teaching was rewarded Monday. He received the coveted Milken Family Foundation's National Educator Award.

Students cheered as he was given a $25,000 check. Chaney can use the money for whatever he wants. He says he'll buy more pencils.
