Federal and state officials are launching a new effort, Operation Lifesaver, to try to prevent pedestrians and vehicles from being hit by trains. They want to persuade drivers not to risk death by trying to beat trains at crossings.

Sometimes vehicles make it, but too often the gambles end in tragedy.

On average in this country, a person is killed every day by a train. Here in Illinois, train accidents involving vehicles or pedestrians shot up 18-percent last year.

The state is considered the nation's rail hub, with 1,300 trains and 40,000 rail cars passing through the region daily.
