Rahm Emanuel gave up a leadership role in Congress and then a key White House leadership post. Now, according to opinion polls, he's leading five other candidates in the battle to succeed the retiring Richard Daley as mayor of Chicago.

Emanuel, a Chicago native, is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College with a master's degree in speech and communication from Northwestern University.

He served three terms as a Northwest Side congressman, And, as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, he led the party to victory when it regained control of the House in 2006.

Emanuel accepted President Obama's invitation to become White House chief of staff and resigned last year to try to succeed Mayor Daley.
