Possible link between rising status of women, smoking

The World Health Organization says in countries with relatively high female empowerment, such as the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway, the gap between male and female smokers is starting to close.

WHO adds that millions of women risk disease and early death in the coming decades as their rising economic and political status leads them to smoke more.

Authors of the study say it makes a strong case for implementing gender specific tobacco control activities that include advertising and promotion bans.
