The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety wants to improve standards for underride guards on large trucks.

New crash tests find that many times the guards do not stop smaller cars from going under them in rear-end collisions. That can cause serious injuries or death.

The institute is asking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to improve underride guards and require the guards on more large semis.
