Discrimination might hurt health of obese people

Obese people are already at risk for a range of health issues. Now a new study says their problems can be made worse it they feel they are being judged unfairly because of their size.

Obesity increases the risk of health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

But a study published in the journal Social Psychology Quarterly finds the sharpest decline in health was among those who felt they were discriminated against because of their weight.

Researchers suggest these people may be internalizing the prejudice they feel and the stress of that is piling on to other health problems.
