'Winter kill' caused fish to die in Glen Ellyn pond

State environmental officials have determined it was a "winter kill" that caused dozens of fish to die in a suburban pond.

It happened at the Maryknoll Estates subdivision in Glen Ellyn.

An inspector with the Illinois Environmental Protection agency visited the site. After observing the situation and talking with homeowners the inspector made the determination.

Apparently, the fish had an inadequate supply of oxygen because of the shallowness of the water and the ice cover. The EPA confirms that's not uncommon during the winter.
