The mayor of Hammond, Ind., is warning residents about what he says could be significant rate increases for some NIPSCO customers.

NIPSCO is proposing a nearly 8-percent increase in electric rates.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Junior says some NIPSCO customers could face double-digit increases on their bills if the increase is approved by the Indiana utility regulatory commission.

Mayor McDermott is urging Hammond residents to speak out at a public hearing on April 7th with the regulatory commission, which will be held at Hammond High School at 6 p.m.
