Hospitalization may make seniors forgetful

Hospitalization may cause temporary memory problems for seniors.

A new study finds those memory problems may make it difficult to understand discharge instructions. That could be crucial to their recovery because those instructions could involve complicated medical instructions, increasing medication errors and chances of rehospitalization.

Authors of the study in the Journal of General and Internal Medicine say the good news is many patients return to normal within a month.

But, they add, the study suggests that seniors may need extra support from health workers and family immediately after they're released from the hospital.
