Study links ADHD to substance abuse problems

That's because a new study in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry finds boys and girls diagnosed with ADHD face a significantly higher risk of developing a substance abuse problem. That includes cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.

The risk was said to be one and a half times greater and past studies have also shown an association.

Experts say anyone with ADHD needs to be counseled about the risk for substance abuse.
