Ninety-six years ago, the SS Eastland was about to embark on a chartered excursion on the Chicago River when it capsized, killing nearly 850 people.

The Eastland Disaster Historical Society hosted a ceremony to mark the anniversary. They gathered at the river's edge between LaSalle and Clark streets.

At the end of the ceremony, the Coast Guard laid a bouquet of flowers into the Chicago River at the site of the disaster.

The Eastland Disaster Historical Society was formed by a family whose ancestors survived the tragedy.
