Officials of the US Environmental Protection Agency joined Congressman Danny Davis in announcing the grants in Chicago Monday.
The Chicago Park District will get $1.1 million to protect and improve the water quality at the city's 24 beaches.
Another $675,000 will be used to control storm water in Northwest Indiana.
The Great Lakes represent the largest single source of freshwater on the earth's surface
