Thousands of same-sex couples have entered into civil unions in Illinois since the state began offering the option.

The same-sex advocacy group "Equality Illinois" says there are 3,700 couples in civil unions in the state. Just over half of those are in Cook County.

The group says 90 of the state's 102 counties have granted at least one license. Illinois began allowing civil unions on June 1, 2011.
