It happened on the westbound side near Route 30 in New Lenox. The vehicle went off the road onto the center median where it struck a piece of construction equipment.
James Vacek, 22, of Crest Hill, died in the crash along with Christopher Banon, 27, and Jenna Bianco, 21.
Investigators say weather did not play a role in the crash. Two of the three victims were wearing their seat belts.
"They were all kind of at the same point, I mean, you know, we all grew up together, we've all been there for each other, and to lose people like that is just...unfair," said Christine Maroscia, victim's sister.
State police say weather conditions did lead to two deaths early Friday on the same road.
Near Joliet, 29-year-old Theresa Lang died when her car swerved off I-80, flipped and hit a tree.
Andres Pita-Jamon of Chicago, lost his life when his car spun out on I-80 and was hit by a semi-truck.
