Chicago pushes for 12 new charter schools

December 13, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Despite recent reports that some charter schools are failing to make the grade, there will soon be more of them in Chicago.

Twelve new charter schools will be going to charter school network United Neighborhood Organization, known as "UNO." Others will go to Catalyst and LEARN.

The Chicago Tribune reports that state records show three of UNO's nine schools are failing, Catalyst's two campuses are underperforming and LEARN's South Shore campus is struggling.

School officials say "on the whole, the charter schools outperform the district."
