Experts tell travelers to avoid germs by washing hands

Crowded planes and trains mean travelers are constantly in contact with surfaces that other people may have coughed or sneezed on.

Simple precautions can help keep those bugs at bay. Frequent hand washing is the most effective deterrent. But if soap and water aren't readily available, travelers should carry alcohol-based hand wipes or sanitizer and remember to wipe off armrests and tray tables before using them.
