Resarch: Cancer treatment has minimal effect on fetus

There is encouraging news for women who find themselves in the frightening situation of having cancer while pregnant.

Studies suggest that these women can be treated almost the same as other cancer patients with minimal risk to the fetus.

Here are some of the findings:

Chemotherapy after the first trimester is possible and radiation therapy is best done in the first two trimesters.

Also, ending the pregnancy doesn't improve chances for the mother when it comes to certain cancers.

The series of papers on this issue are in the journals Lancet and Lancet Oncology.
