A rare palm tree that beat the odds and flourished in Chicago has died.

Chicago horticulturists planted the double coconut tree in the 1960s in the Garfield Park Conservatory.

Staffers say they noticed a "drastic change" in the tree's appearance recently and took soil and tissue samples hoping to nail down a cause. But they could not save the tree in time.

They are still trying to figure out exactly how it died.

The tree was the largest of its species to survive in a greenhouse.
