A new report by Javelin Strategy and Research finds 13 percent more Americans fell victim to identity theft last year compared with 2010.

The report says a rise in the use of smartphones and social media fueled the increase.

Experts believe thieves are targeting smartphones and social media because consumers tend to be less cautious when using them.

Last year, nearly 12 million Americans were the victims of identity theft.
