The Read to Learn program in the northwest suburbs, like other free literacy programs throughout the region, has helped thousands of residents improve their literacy skills, improve their economic and social status in the community and earn their U.S. citizenship and reach their goals.

Driven by volunteer tutors who often do not speak the languages of their students, students learn to shop for groceries, have conversations with their doctors and their children's teachers; things most suburban residents take for granted.
