The Chicago Tribune says the settlement was approved by the courts on March 27.
The 53-year-old Tyree had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and was being treated at the University of Chicago for pneumonia at the time of his death.
The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accident caused by an air embolism during removal of a dialysis catheter.
The money will go to Tyree's widow and his three children.
