Protesters rally against new Chicago landfills

May 29, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Chicago has a moratorium on landfills.

State legislators are considering a bill to ban any new landfills or landfill expansions in Cook County. This comes after Chicago lost in a lawsuit last week. A waste disposal company which owns land on the South Side may now expand.

Critics claim operating landfills negatively impact urban areas.

The bill passed the Illinois House Environmental Health Committee on Tuesday. It now goes to the house floor.
