Police: 16-year-old boy dies after shot in chest

June 2, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Police said they received a call of shots fired about 3:47 p.m. and discovered the boy laying on the ground in the 7300 block of South Coles Avenue with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Paramedics took the boy in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Jamal Lockett, 16, of the 7500 block of South Colfax Avenue, was pronounced dead at 4:22 p.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office, adding that his preliminary cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said they were looking into the possibility that the boy's death is connected to a shooting that took place down the street that wounded two men on Thursday night.

The men, 33 and 19, were walking in the 7400 block of South Coles Avenue about 10 p.m. when a vehicle approached and someone inside shot at them, police said.

The 33-year-old was shot in the back, and the 19-year-old suffered a graze wound to the back, Gaines said. They made it to South Shore Hospital without an ambulance and were listed in good condition Friday.

No one was in custody for either shooting, and both are being investigated by Area Central detectives.
